CHALLENGE

Simera is active in multiple product development fields such as optical systems for space, medical and industrial systems, advanced and general structures and systems, embedded electronics and mechanics. Since Simera’s participation extends from the ideation up to product development and testing phases, significant infrastructure is needed. Simera has made use of other surrounding facilities for projects in these industries by partnering. However, for the precision optical domain, access to suitably sized environmentally controlled and vibration isolated facilities was not readily available, and to better serve its growing client base in this sphere, a solution had to be found.

SOLUTION

It was decided to develop on-site Optical AIT (Assembly, Integration & Testing) multi-room Cleanroom Facilities with a permanent setup of precision alignment and test hardware dedicated to optical systems with apertures up to 250 mm and focal lengths of up to 2000 mm. Being developed around active programs, the facilities could be optimized to suit modern alignment and testing methods.

The cleanroom includes a vibration-isolated 5 m focal length collimator plus vibration isolated optical integration and interferometry test benches. A selection of optical equipment such as Fizeau Interferometers, Electronic Autocollimators, Shack Hartmann test systems, reference flats and ultra-precise air bearing rotation benches allow for accurate and repeatable measurements to be taken. Moreover, on site parts preparation and painting facilities were established according to space-rated processes to allow for rapid on-site turnaround of parts, ready for precision assembly.

OUTCOME

ISO-7 Cleanroom facilities are established, complete with optical test and validation capability together with component preparation and painting infrastructure which enable end-to-end onsite preparation, integration and testing of Space-Rated optical and mechanical systems. Simera has also developed its own Optical Performance testing systems, with data processing algorithms used to reliably provide various Performance Characteristics. Not only does the availability of this infrastructure open up opportunities for Simera, the companies surrounding Simera now have access to these niche facilities to support general growth in the space and optical domains.
