Establishing and maintaining the consistency of a system or product and associated documentation throughout its lifetime is challenging. Simera historically stored documentation and CAD models on a shared network drive, making traceability very difficult. With the design, development and manufacture of large satellite imager systems Simera’s management realized the need for a formal configuration management system.
The Simera project team investigated configuration management solutions to establish and maintain consistent product performance, encompassing design, function, physical attributes and operation throughout its life cycle. The Siemens Teamcenter Product Life-cycle Management (PLM) system was implemented. All CAD models and documents were uploaded into the system, duplicate files were eliminated and all uncontrolled files outside the PLM system were deleted after being imported.
All documentation, CAD models and simulation models were placed under configuration management for the satellite imager project. Duplication of data and confusion around which document is the latest version have been eliminated by having a single source for data. These are some of the advantages of using a PLM system. Since implementation, all new projects are managed in the Teamcenter PLM system.
